Friends of King William Animal Shelter (Friends) was established in 2023 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in collaboration with King William County and the Regional Animal Shelter (RAS). Friends was formed to provide a means to obtain and manage grants, donated funds, and supplies, as well as to support and enhance the programs at RAS.  With the newly formed Friends of King William Animal Shelter and other volunteers from our community, we can bring our lifesaving rate up by having funds for more low-cost spay/neuter and rabies clinics for community pets, have additional funds for medical emergencies not covered by the County, and help caretakers feeding community cats by having Trap-Neuter-Return clinics available for free.  Donations are 100% tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Medical Care

With funds we raise, we can provide lifesaving and life-improving medical care to pets suffering from injury, illness, abuse, or neglect, including chronic conditions. Examples include treatment for heartworms, medications for epilepsy, and surgical repair of injuries and congenital conditions.  The cost of extensive veterinary care can be prohibitive for RAS, cause potential adopters to hesitate because of cost, and ultimately lead to euthanasia due to lack of placement.

Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Clinics

Friends will raise funds to help provide low-cost spay and neuter services for RAS, along with privately owned pets, to help reduce pet overpopulation.

Community (feral) cats

Friends will provide spay and neuter funds for community cats through Trap-Neuter-Return programs, helping to reduce the problem of pet overpopulation in feral and stray cats, and provide support to caretakers who care for these community cats.

Relocating Shelter Animals

Friends will help sponsor spays and neuters, vaccinations, other medical needs, and training support, to ensure RAS pets can be placed in a partner rescue organization.

Adoption Spotlight Program

We will spotlight shelter pets on social media posts, which helps to shed light on pets up for adoption who may need more attention or have special needs.

Vaccination and Microchip Clinics

RAS will help coordinate low-cost vaccination and microchip clinics for owned pets in the community, ensuring pets are protected against deadly diseases and can be identified in case they become lost.  Friends will raise funds to help with the cost of these services.

Community Education and Outreach Events

Friends volunteers will attend community events to share information about Friends and RAS’ programs and services and to showcase pets for adoption.
